Get Informed.

Mental health conditions are common.

  • 1 in 5 adults in the United States lives with a mental health condition.
  • 1 in 25 (10 million) adults in the United States lives with a serious mental illness. 60 million people in the United States face the day-to-day reality of living with a mental illness.
  • Half of all lifetime mental health conditions begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24, but early intervention programs can help.
  • Treatment can help, but isn’t always sought. The best treatments for serious mental illnesses today are highly effective; between 70 and 90% of individuals have significant reduction of symptoms and improved quality of life with the right treatments and support.
  • Individuals with mental health conditions struggle on average 10 years before engaging in treatment. Even though most people can experience relief from their symptoms and support for their recovery, less than half of all adults in the U.S. who need mental health services and support get the help they need.

Get Involved.

Share your story. People living with mental health conditions need to know they are not alone, and your voice is powerful. Share your personal experience with mental health challenges or write a letter to those who may not feel brave enough to do so to encourage and support others in similar experiences.

Take the pledge to be StigmaFree. The StigmaFree campaign is NAMI’s effort to end stigma and create hope for those affected by mental illness.

Post on social media using #StigmaFree all month long to join in supporting the millions of Americans affected by mental health. Get creative with your content. Download graphics here or post a photo wearing green (the color for mental health) showing your support and encouraging others to get involved.

Walk for mental health. Participate in one the many NAMIWalks events around the country. These walks bring people together to fundraise, promote awareness of mental illness, and show the world they are #StigmaFree.
